Matteo Gallo

Head coach 

Head Coach Matteo Gallo started his fencing career at the age of 14 with the Gemina Scherma Fencing Club. Over his career he won several Italian national medals and became a two-time Junior World Cup finalist which earned him a spot on the Italian Junior National Team.

He retired from fencing in 2014 and devote himself to coaching and refereeing. Matteo is a licenced FIE sabre referee and  he has refereed each blade at Italian National Championships as well as several international events including Junior World Cups, European cadet circuits, and European Championships.

In 2014 he started his coaching career serving as Assistant Coach at Gemina Scherma Fencing Club. In 2015 he began his professional training as a fencing coach through the Italian Fencing Federation education system and became “Regional instructor”. In 2016 he became a “National Instructor” (Prevot d’Escrime). After two additional years of training he passed the advanced coahing exam and obtained the title of “Maestro di Scherma”.

Matteo’s students have been medalists at the Italian Youth Championships, members of the Italian National Team, and have participated in European Cadet competitions, Junior and Senior World Cup, and World Championships.​ 

In 2019 he relocated to California to coach at Salle D'Asaro Fencing Club, taking under his tutelage the former European Champion and All-American fencer Teodora Kakhiani and multiple time National Champion Maverick Doherty.

From the 2019-2020 season he is the founder, owner and head coach of South Bay Fencing Academy,
